THE STORY OF MAKEOUT HILL.

Makeout Hill represents an idea, a nostalgic yearning, the embodiment of feeling good. The name Makeout Hill was inspired by watching old classic horror movies like Friday the 13th on TV leading up to this past Halloween. The raw graining vintage feel of movies from the 70’s and 80’s just has this great feeling of authenticity to me as well as the warm hug nostalgia. I was struck by the observation that, at the beginning of these films centered around terror, everything was idealistic; a happy family, endless possibilities ahead. Everything was simple, light, and easy. With Makeout Hill I wanted to create that feeling of nostalgia I felt watching old classic horror films, specifically that happy, positive feeling always captured in the beginning. I wanted the brand to feel authentic and raw with a wide variety of designs that matched with the loose open-ended meanings and interpretations of the wearer’s own nostalgia.

THE MAKEOUT HILL MISSION.

Makeout Hill places a large emphasis on not just the designs and graphics of each piece but also on the fit and material. Too many clothing brands are successful in one of those areas but fail in the other. I have countless pieces that fit great and are super comfortable but lack in design. On the contrary, I have pieces with great design that fit super awkward or are terribly uncomfortable. Makeout Hill puts this issue to bed by using the best, high-quality material designed to fit and fall on the body in a flattering and comfortable fashion. Makeout Hill was designed to be worn with comfort and confidence, whether that’s laying around the house watching Netflix or going out with friends, you can feel good in the piece you’re wearing. Makeout Hill does not believe you should have to compromise between comfort and style.

THE RESEARCH PROCESS

In order to gage who my target audience is and what they are looking for in a clothing brand, I conducted multiple interviews with a wide variety of users in addition to creating user personas and empathy maps. Once I had a clear picture of who I was designing for, I moved into the process phase which included conducting competitive analysis of other success brands, sketching, and mood boarding to help me get down the desired aesthetic along with the mood which the brand conveys. Conducting diligent and thorough research would help me identify my brand as well as make for stronger brand messaging and designs down the road.

WHAT Pieces CONSUMERS ARE LOOKING FOR.

I started off by polling a large amount of people at random. This data was gathered from an online poll conducted on Twitter with 2,000 participants. This information gave me a good idea of what consumers were looking for when it came to a clothing brand and what pieces they were most likely going to buy. Polling allowed me to get key information on a large scale relatively quickly. This poll was mainly designed to help me narrow in on what product lines my brand should sell.

 

USER INTERVIEWS

I sat down and interviewed four separate users that fit under my target audience. I made sure to interview four people of all different ages and demographics to give me a well rounded view of my client base. This data was designed to give me a more indepth look at my target audience.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Taking a look at other brands and seeing what is working and what could be improved. This is intended to give me some ideas and inspiration of what kind of things are successful on the market. This also shows me what kind of things even the best brands could be doing better and I could improve on.

MOOD BOARDS

Gathering ideas and inspiration for the brand regarding color, imagery, and overall aesthetic. This imagery was gathered to not so much help me figure out how I wanted the pieces to look but rather how I wanted the brand to feel. Here I am trying to set the mood of the brand as a whole.

USER PERSONAS & EMPATHY MAPS

Creating different hypothetical potential clients helped me better understand what a user might be looking for in a clothing brand. Creating personas and empathy maps helped me get out of my own head and put myself in the users shoes, helping me learn how they think, feel, and want.

TYPOGRAPHIC LOGO SKETCHES

For a brand logo I wanted to design a typographic mark using the brands “MH” initials. I wanted this to be very clean, simple, and bold. I wanted to design a logo mark that could be used seamlessly across the brand design system.

I spent a lot of time sketching and working on paper for designing the graphics that would be used across the brand. I found myself sketching very loose and fun concepts and creatures playing off of the ideals behind the brand. I wanted the graphics to be rather simple and clean for the most part but was still opened to experimenting with different things at this stage.

Makeout Hill teamed up with the Iconic Converse brand to create a limited edition line of Makeout Hill X Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars. This collaboration included the illustrations and graphics from Makeout Hill paired with the classic silhouette of the Chuck Taylor sneaker.

These would be vehicles with Makeout Hill brand custom wraps to help promote the brand and spread the word about our products. Most of these vehicles would ideally be sports cars to grab people’s attention as well as speak to the high end quality of out products. Makeout Hill would also use brand vans to help transport and deliver products to customers and wholesalers.
